EYFS

Foundation Stage

Children join Yes Tor (Pre school) as soon as they reach two years old. This, along with our Brentor class (Reception), makes up our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Children in these classes follow our EYFS curriculum, which gives children a broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundations for good future progress through school and life.

Our curriculum is language rich and each of our topics uses a variety of inspiring stories and nursery rhymes to underpin the learning that will take place. Children learn and develop new skills and knowledge and demonstrate their understanding through the seven areas of learning and development.

Prime Areas:

  • Communication and Language

  • Physical Development

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Specific Areas:

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the World

  • Expressive Arts and Creative Designs

These 7 areas are used to plan children's learning through their own individual needs and interests. In our EYFS setting children will learn through a mixture of direct teaching, playing and exploring to create critical thinkers and active learners both indoors and outside.
Read Write Inc.
At Lew Trenchard we follow the RWI scheme, an inclusive synthetic phonic programme from pre-school up through KS1 to support with children to read, write and spell.

Our aims and objectives of the RWI programme are:
  • apply the skills of blending phonemes in order to read words.
  • segment words to support their spelling
  • read high fluency words that do not conform to regular phonic patterns.
  • read texts and words that are within their phonic capabilities as soon as possible.
  • decode texts effortlessly so that their focus can be used on the reading to learn (comprehension)
  • spell effortlessly so that their focus can be directed towards the composition of their writing.
